A closer look: meet the seven newcomers to field hockey

NORFOLK, Virginia – Old Dominion Field Hockey Head Coach Andrew Griffiths added a total of seven newcomers, including two transfers to the Monarchs roster for the 2021 season. Alix marien, Aubrey mytych, Arden Patterson, Smart meghan, Kelly taylor, Payton Wilson and Frederique Zandbergen are the new members of the program.

MEET THE NEW MONARCHS

ALIX MARIEN
Year: First-year student
Hometown: Kapellen, Belgium
High school: Gemeentelijk Institut Brasschaat
Position: Midfielder

Marien helped her U14 and U16 teams win the championships at home in Belgium.

AUBREY MYTYCH
Year: Second year
Hometown: Wyoming, Pennsylvania.
High school: Wyoming Seminar Preparation
The last school: State of pennsylvania
Position: Cheeky

As a freshman at Penn State, Mytych got her first career assist in a game against Old Dominion.

ARDEN PATTERSON
Year: First-year student
Hometown: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
High school: Mechanicsburg Area Senior
Position: Cheeky

Patterson was a college letterer for four years in high school and twice led the team in scoring for the season.

Hometown: Haddonfield, New Jersey
High school: Haddonfield Memorial
The last school: Application state
Position: Cheeky

Last season at App State, Smart was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first mountaineer in program history to receive the Player of the Year award. Nationally, Smart was ranked 15th in goals per game and 19th in points per game. She ended her App State career tied for 10th all-time with 26 goals scored.

High school: Colonial First
Position: Middle / rear

Kelly is the younger sister of Riley taylor, who is currently a senior on the Monarchs roster. Taylor was the First All-Region Team in 2018 and the Second All-Tidewater Team in 2019 and 2021.

Hometown: Chesapeake, Virginia
High school: Grand Bridge
Position: Cheeky

Wilson was a two-time state champion at Great Bridge. She also competed in the 2018-19 Junior Olympics and won a silver medal.

FREDERIQUE ZANDBERGEN
Year: First-year student
Hometown: Tilburg, Netherlands
High school: Theresialyceum
Position: Midfielder

Zandbergen played for HC Tilburg and was named player of the 2018 International Challenge Cup tournament.

Old Dominion will begin the season by hosting Delaware on August 27 at 1 p.m. at LR Hill Sports Complex.
