The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy is up for grabs on Saturday as the Air Force and Army travel to Arlington, Texas for the second leg of the three-way trophy. Army is having another solid season, but has lost three straight games. The most recent was a 70-56 electric shootout against No.9 Wake Forest in what has been one of the best games of the season. The Black Knights’ other two losses are against 5-4 Ball State and No. 21 Wisconsin.
Air Force holds a dominant 37-17-1 advantage in the all-time series against Army, but the rivals have not played a neutral venue match since November 6, 1965 in Chicago. The Army edged the Air Force 10-7 in 2020 as running back Jakobi Buchanan rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown.

History of the CIC Trophy: The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy is one of two FBS trophies in a three-way series. The only other rivalry trophy awarded each year is the Michigan MAC Trophy, between Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Central Michigan. The Air Force hasn’t won the highest honor in academic football since 2016, but it leads the three institutions with 20 victories. The Navy is second with 16 victories, while the Army has nine. However, the Knights have won three of the past four years.
Dynamic runner: Air Force junior running back Brad Roberts is having a stellar season as the Falcons running back. Roberts – who is from Arvada, Colo., Just 80 miles down the road – has run for 100 yards five times in eight games and ranks No. 16 nationally in rushing yards per game. No other rusher in the service academy makes it into the top 70. Option offenses like to spread things out on the ground, but the Air Force has one of the most trusted hobbyhorse backs in the country. .
Stingy defense: While the Black Knights engaged in a savage shootout in their last game, they are generally known for their defense. Only one other opponent – the mighty Western Kentucky – has scored over 30 points against this defense. Outside of Wake Forest, opponents are averaging just 275.2 yards per game. Linebacker Andre Carter II ranks among the team managers with 16 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, seven sacks, one pass and one forced fumble.
