BYU Football: Predict the Leader in Each Major Stats Category

0

BYU kicks off its 2021 season next Saturday. Heading into the opener against Arizona, let’s predict which players will lead the Cougars in each major stat category.

Overtaking Course – Jaren Hall

Responsible 2020: Zach Wilson

Jaren Hall has been named BYU’s starting quarterback for Game 1 against Arizona. Injuries kept Hall off the field during his BYU career. If Hall can stay healthy, he will lead the Cougars in passing yards by a wide margin.

Rush Lessons – Tyler Allgeier

Responsible 2020: Tyler Allgeier

No surprise here. Allgeier averaged 7.5 yards per carry as he ran for 1,130 yards last season. Allgeier will lead the Cougars in the race again, barring injury. Allgeier’s second campaign put him firmly on the NFL radar.

Rush Touchdowns – Tyler Allgeier

Responsible 2020: Tyler Allgeier

Allgeier ran for 13 touchdowns last season. It is difficult to bet against Allgeier this season. Lopini Katoa will also score his share of touchdowns – Katoa ran for five touchdowns last season.

Reception course – Neil Pau’u

Responsible 2020: Dax Milne

Neil Pau’u racked up 603 receiving yards last year. After impressing during the fall camp, Pau’u gets my vote to lead the Cougars to host this season.

Receiving Touchdowns – Isaac Rex

Leader 2020: Isaac Rex

Isaac Rex was downright dynamic in the red zone last season with 12 touchdowns received. I expect him to play a major role again this season, especially in the red zone.

Tackling – Keenan Pili

Responsible 2020: Isaiah Kaufusi

Keenan Pili was second behind Isaiah Kaufusi in total tackles last season. Pili will be one of BYU’s most important defense this season.

Bags – Tyler Batty

Leaders 2020: Isaiah Kaufusi and Tyler Batty

No surprise here. Tyler Batty has the potential to be the best passer in the Sitake era. Batty missed several games with injury last season, and he still led the Cougars in the sacks last season.

Interceptions – Chaz Ah You

Leaders 2020: Troy Warner

BYU only had one player with multiple interceptions last season: Troy Warner.

After spending his first seasons as linebacker, Chaz Ah You will make a safe start. Ah You have the talent to be a very special player for BYU this season.
