HU Baseball hires Donovan Clark as strength and conditioning coach – the Huntingtonian

A former HU baseball player has returned to college to coach full time for the season.

Forester baseball recently hired former outfielder Donovan Clark as their new strength and conditioning coach. Clark played two seasons for the Foresters in the 2018 and 2019 seasons and transferred from Purdue University to Fort Wayne and Indiana University.

Since graduation, Clark has worked in marketing and with athletes in the Fort Wayne and Indianapolis area. He worked briefly with Forester’s baseball program in the fall of 2019 before joining the team full-time that season.

Coach Thad Frame came up with the idea to tell Clark about the job, and it was just a conversation with his mom that convinced him to consider it.

“I was like okay, this is what I have to do,” Clark said. “I decided to call Thad back to see if the position was available.”

There couldn’t be anyone happier than baseball players about the hiring, as the 2018 high school class freshman is now a senior who played with Clark. These players trust him because they have witnessed a program manager leading them to a regular season conference championship and breaking his own school record for stolen bases with 32.
One of those players is senior pitcher Joey Butz, who is constantly working on his craft.

“I was really excited just because it was Donovan,” said Butz, “especially with him as a young coach and playing with him. He’s easy to understand. He’s very open.

Butz uses a program called PRP (Passion Resilience Process), a data-driven organization for baseball-specific weight training to throw faster, smarter, and to prevent injury. PRP is a daily program, and Clark reached out to Butz this summer to find out more about what they do and even toured the facility.

“One thing I really appreciate about him is the way he always learns, especially with things he doesn’t have a lot of experience with, like the pitching side of training,” said Butz. .

Thad Frame spoke to head coach Mike Frame about who to hire as a strength and conditioning trainer. It wasn’t long before Thad Frame mentioned Clark in the conversation, and Mike Frame was on board from the start, knowing the program would embrace him quickly.

“Our guys really like him,” said Mike Frame, “his workouts are tough, but I think they’re leaving, ‘okay I think I’m improving. I think I’m doing the things I’m doing. must do to play baseball at a high level.

These workouts are a combination of what Clark has learned over the years in different programs and even other sports. At Indiana University, Clark was a 3-star recruit from Fort Wayne to play football as a defensive back. From football to baseball, Clark understands the training routine is different and is constantly trying new things that work.

“I’m like, ‘where is that going to translate on the pitch?'” Said Clark, “and if I can’t see it or explain it to a player then I really don’t feel comfortable having him do that workout. “

Getting faster and stronger is the main part of the job description in any school. However, Clark said his No.1 priority is to ensure the team remains injury free and healthy throughout the year. He said injuries have hurt his team’s chances of winning in the past, and having his team “buy in” to the process is key to that.

“It’s a lot easier for an athlete to come in and not wonder why I’m doing this jump?” Clark said, “Why am I making this move?” When they understand exactly where it comes from.

This fall, the Forester baseball players train with Clark early in the morning and get up three times a week at 6 a.m. Most of the players are on board on time and are ready to do their jobs early. The team are excited to continue to improve and improve for the start of the spring season.
