On Monday afternoon, the University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team announced their team captains for the 2021-22 season. For the second year in a row, Noah Cates will take on the captain position for the Bulldogs, while Kobe Roth, Louie roehl, and Tanner Laderoute will serve as assistant captains.
A native of Stillwater, Minn., Cates previously served as team captain in the 2020-21 campaign. During the season, the senior forward scored five goals and 14 assists for 19 points and helped UMD make their fourth consecutive appearance in Frozen Four. For his performance on the ice, Cates was named the NCHC Second Team All-Star. In 102 total games with the Bulldogs, Cates had 28 goals and 47 assists for 75 points. Additionally, Cates has an impressive +23 rating during his career at Duluth. During the 2019-2020 season, Cates received First Team All-NCHC recognition.
For a second consecutive season, the veteran defender Louie roehl will serve as assistant captain for the UMD. During the 2020-21 season, Roehl played all 28 games for the Bulldogs, while also registering three assists and a +1 rating over the year. One of the most experienced players in the UMD roster, Roehl has appeared in 142 career games with Minnesota Duluth. In the UMD’s third national championship in 2018-19, Roehl posted a score of +14 in 42 games this season.
After a career best season of 23 points in 2020-2021, Kobe Roth was appointed deputy captain of the UMD. The talented forward has had an exceptional season in which he scored 13 goals and 10 assists in just 28 games. Perhaps more important than the total points, Roth’s side led four game-winning goals in the 2020-21 season. Additionally, Roth finished in the top 3 on the list with a +10 rating over the season.
Also accepting the duties of captain for the first time is onwards Tanner Laderoute. In the 2020-21 season, the Edmonton, Alta. Native played all 28 UMD games, while recording three goals and seven assists for ten points. For his career, Laderoute has recorded 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points in 97 games. He is also a three-time member of the NCHC All-Academic Team.
The Bulldogs will begin their season in Bemidji State on Friday, October 8.
