Report: OU’s Sherfield eligible to play hoop this season
OU men’s basketball guard Grant Sherfield has been granted an NCAA waiver and is eligible for the 2022-23 basketball season, according to a CBS Sports report. Sherfield was transferred from Nevada, where he averaged 19.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists last season as a junior.
The 6-foot-2 Sherfield is a two-time transfer that required an NCAA waiver to play OU. Prior to playing in Nevada, Sherfield spent time at Wichita State.
Home run queen Alo wins the ESPY
Oklahoma softball slugger Jocelyn Alo was named Tuesday night’s ESPY winner for top varsity athlete, women’s sports. Aliyah Boston (South Carolina, basketball), Jaelin Howell (Florida State, football) and Charlotte North (Boston College, lacrosse) were also up for the award.
Alo led OU to its second consecutive Women’s College World Series softball championship last spring. The two-time United States Collegiate Softball Player of the Year finished her career with an NCAA-record 122 homers. Alo became the first player in NCAA Division I history to hit more than 30 homers in a season while batting .500 or better.
BIG 12: Alo and award-winning golfer Chris Gotterup are Oklahoma’s nominees for Big 12 Female and Male Athlete of the Year. Track and field champion Taylor Roe and golfer Eugenio Chacarra are Oklahoma State’s nominees. Winners will be announced the week of July 25. Each Big 12 school nominates a nominee for Female and Male Athlete of the Year.
OU’s Willits promoted to associate head coach
Oklahoma baseball head coach Skip Johnson announced the promotion of volunteer assistant Reggie Willits to associate head coach on Wednesday.
Willits joined the OU staff in January and served as a volunteer coach through the 2022 season in which the Sooners won the Big 12 Championship and reached the NCAA Men’s College World Series Finals. The former major league player and New York Yankees assistant coach will continue to coordinate OU’s offense and coach the outfielders.
The inaugural River Bowl Classic is scheduled for August 6
The OKC Black Alumni Coalition, Inc. (OBAC) will launch its first community-building project, the 2022 River Bowl Classic, on Saturday, August 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at RIVERSPORT OKC.
The event is the first of its kind and will include dragon boat and rowing competitions with alumni and students from Oklahoma City’s six predominantly black high schools: Douglass, Dunjee, John Marshall, Millwood, Northeast and Star Spencer.

Stenson joins Saudi tour, stripped of Ryder Cup captaincy
Henrik Stenson’s Ryder Cup captaincy lasted four months.

NBA: Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges is facing three domestic violence charges in Southern California after being accused of assaulting his girlfriend in front of their two children last month.
