Southeast basketball wins 7 of top 8


Southeastern have won seven of their first eight men’s basketball games, the most recent being a 74-70 victory over Union College on Sunday at The Show in Kingsport, Tennessee.

The victory was fueled by junior forward Riley Minix, who had a career-high 35 points while also posting 10 rebounds – the forward’s fifth double-double of the season.

Minix, who averages 22.3 points and 10.3 rebounds on 62% of shooting school, scored 20 of his 35 points in the first half.

Southeastern (7-1.3-0) will then face Sun Conference rival Webber International (3-7, 0-2) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Babson Park.

SEU baseball player Sam Faith makes the All-America preseason

For the second year in a row, junior Southeast infielder Sam Faith secured a spot on the All-America preseason baseball team.

Last spring, Faith was recognized as a second NAIA All-American team with a .411 score with 54 RBIs, 62 RBIs, 20 doubles, two triples and 12 homers on a 51-9 team in 2021. Faith last season was an All-SUN First Team player and a member of the SUN Gold Glove Team.

5 SEU wrestlers in the top 6 of the Life U Invitational

Five wrestlers from the South East placed in the top six at the Life U Invitational on November 20.

Sophomore Sal Silva (157 pounds) was third, recording three major decisions. Silva’s only loss was to Lindsey Wilson’s number 3 Derrick Smallwood.

Junior Isaac Crowell (125) finished fourth. Crowell lost 3-2 in the semifinals to number 2 Justin Portillo of Grand View. Junior Esau Bazilme finished sixth in the Open 125, winning two bloody matches.

Graduate student Stephen Kelle (174) finished day five, scoring a sudden victory in his first game. He also won two major decisions in the consolation rounds.

And rookie Izac Martinez (157) finished sixth, scoring a technical crash and a decision.

Southeastern (3-0) will then face off at home (The Fire Pit) against Keizer University on Friday at 7pm.

Warner’s men’s soccer ends its season in regional championships

The men’s soccer team finished this year in the NCCAA Regional Championship game on November 20.

Warner’s best season (9-6-4) since 2018 ended in a 1-0 loss to Carolina University in Lake Wales. Second-year goaltender Woodlerson Cyrius made seven saves in the game.

Polk State basketball jumps to 5-2

A 90-73 victory over Hillsborough Community College on Nov. 22 took the Polk State men’s basketball team to 5-2.

First-year goaltender Eric Butler had 17 points, a team-high, with three steals and three assists. Second-year guard Tommie Lewis scored 16 points while contributing 10 boards and four assists. Second-year forward Keenon Cole had 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles’ next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Florida Southwestern in Fort Myers.

Webber basketball loses 2 of last 3

Webber International’s men’s basketball team lost 92-85 to Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday, losing two of their last three games.

Junior guard Tiyon Martin had 21 points, a team-high, while recording three assists and four rebounds. Senior goaltender Jaylon Myles had 16 points and eight rebounds, and first-year forward Jordan Golden had 15 points and five rebounds. Webber’s next game is Thursday at home against Southeastern.

Baseball pitcher Webber Rey Rodriguez named preseason All-America

Junior right-handed pitcher Rey Rodriguez was named to the All-America preseason baseball team last week.

Rodriguez, who won the honor for the first time, is one of two juniors on the list. He is also one of the five named pitchers.

Last season – a campaign that ended 28-24, 14-10 in the conference – Rodriguez had a 2.24 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings. He also finished the year tied for first in the Sun Conference in saves, while tied for 14th with a 4-1 record.

3 Webber football players receive All-Conference honors

Senior running back Tremon Bright, senior defensive back Devonte Harris and senior linebacker Colton Cormier took home the All-Conference Team honors in the Sun Division of the Mid-South Conference in late November.

Bright, a member of the All-Conference first team, finished with 1,024 rushing yards and four touchdowns. This is the second time since 2015 that Webber has a 1,000-yard rusher.

Harris, a second-team All-Conference player, led the team with 68 tackles, while also making one forced fumble, two break-ups and one interception.

Cormier, also a second team member, had 56 tackles in eight games. This is the third consecutive year Harris has won all conference honors.

South Florida Falls to St. Edwards at the Terrace Hotel Classic

Junior guard DeAndre Campbell’s career-high 27 points wasn’t enough, as the Moccasins lost 86-79 to St. Edwards University in the Terrace Hotel Thanksgiving Classic’s final game on Saturday at Jenkins Field House.

Graduate student Jack Casale had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

While the Moccasins lost two of three, the men’s basketball program won 99-86 over USC Aiken in their home opener on Nov. 23.

Graduate goaltender Tarik McKelphin scored 24 points, a season-high.

Florida Southern (2-4, 0-1) will play Wednesday on the road against Florida Tech.

FSC’s Kyle Micallef named conference swimmer of the week

Sophomore Kyle Micallef was the Sunshine State Conference’s male swimmer of the week.

Micallef won two events at the Panther Invitational, which was hosted by Florida Tech on November 19. Micallef had a preliminary time of 19.59 in the 50-meter freestyle, which is a new school record. This gives Micallef an automatic qualification for the NCAA Championships in March.

Micallef won the final in the 50-yard free with a time of 19.96 seconds, as well as the 100-yard free with a time of 44.15.

Overall, the men’s team placed first.
